Local author speaks at Linden Tree today

Children's author, poet and playwright Caryn Yacowitz of Palo Alto is scheduled to speak at 9:30 a.m. today in the courtyard at Linden Tree Children's Recordings & Books.

Yacowitz will discuss two of her picture books, "Pumpkin Fiesta" and "The Jade Stone." "Pumpkin Fiesta," published in 1998, is bright with paintings by well-known illustrator Joe Cepeda. The painter Ju-Hong Chen illustrated "The Jade Stone." Yacowitz adapted the stories from folktales, and both books were named to the California Collections.

Linden Tree is located at 170 State St. in downtown Los Altos. For more information, call the store at 949-3390.

Greer speaks at LAHS

The Community Read program at Los Altos High School has scheduled Andrew Sean Greer to discuss his award-winning novel, "The Confessions of Max Tivoli," 7 p.m. Thursday in the LAHS Eagle Theater. The Community Read is one of several events during the school's 21st annual Writers Week.

The community is invited to read NBC's "Today Show" book club pick and hear the author speak about living life backwards. Described as "enchanting" (John Updike), "dazzling" (New York Times) and "brilliantly conceived" (Los Angeles Times), "The Confessions of Max Tivoli" is the unlikely story of a man who ages backwards physically. As he grows older, he changes in appearance from an old man to a young child.

The Eagle Theater is located at 201 Almond Ave. Donations to support Writers Week are appreciated. Copies of the book will be sold, with a book signing following the event.

For more information, call Galen Rosenberg, LAHS English Department, 960-8845.
