Ways to beat the stay-at-home blues

With so many activities being canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak, staying home more can feel isolating, especially for seniors. Following are a few suggestions for keeping busy and active during what may be a difficult season for some.

• Go for a walk. Enjoy the spring weather, and maybe make a new friend on the stroll.

• Stay connected. Phone an old friend or write a letter to a grandchild.

• Become an armchair traveler. Plan a dream vacation or a shorter getaway for when the coast is clear.

• Organize photos. Scan a box of photos, organize them in albums or sort them into envelopes for various family members.

• Organize drawers, cupboards or closets. Choose one storage space per day to make the task less daunting.

• Garden. It’s the perfect time for spring planting.

• Catch up on reading.

• Try something new. Write a poem or a short story, draw a picture or cook a new recipe.

• Work your brain. The Town Crier’s puzzles this week are on page 40.

• Make a to-do list. What do you want to do when things get back to normal? Is there a class you’d like to sign up for? A movie you’d like to see? Someplace you’d like to volunteer?

• Make a bucket list. What are your dreams? Even if they seem unattainable, write them down.
