MV promotes ‘age-friendly’ status

The Mountain View Senior Advisory Committee held an open meeting on age-friendly and dementia-friendly communities at the Mountain View Senior Center Nov. 29.

According to Diana Miller of the Santa Clara County Department of Aging and Adult Services, each of Santa Clara County’s 15 cities has been designated “age-friendly,” a status defined by inclusiveness, accessibility and the promotion of active aging.

The presentation also touched on the “dementia-friendly” movement, teaching compassion and patience and encouraging people to become “dementia friends.”

Christmas celebrated Mexican-style

Participants in the weekly Spanish class at The Terraces at Los Altos enjoyed a “Las Posadas” lunch event Dec. 18.

Las Posadas (“the inns”) is traditionally a nine-day religious event (Dec. 16-24) that commemorates Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging as they journeyed from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

Cathy Jensen, lifestyle director at The Terraces, deemed the celebration a success.

“I invited a couple of Spanish-speaking team members to join us. One of them … shared his personal story of Las Posadas as a young boy in Mexico,” Jensen said. “We ate tamales, churros and other snack-type foods characteristic of Las Posadas celebrations.”
