Avenidas, MV host annual Caregiver Conference

Avenidas and the city of Mountain View have teamed up to sponsor the 13th annual Caregiver Conference, “From Crisis to Confidence,” 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escuela Ave.

Keynote speaker Lisa Krieger, reporter for The Mercury News, will discuss “The Slow Medicine Movement” at 9 a.m., higlighting legislative and policy efforts to improve caregiving, palliative medicine and the final years of life.

The conference will include three breakout sessions.

Session 1, 10-11 a.m.

• Coping with Cognitive Decline. Tonita E. Wroolie, Ph.D., clinical associate professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, and Linda Nastari, LCSW, will discuss how stages of cognitive decline limit a loved one’s decision-making capacity, creating new challenges in a caregiver’s roles and responsibilities.

• Clarifying Concerns: The Outpatient Medical Appointment. Betsy Conlan, LCSW, of Stanford Health Care will outline strategies to identify critical changes in a loved one’s health and create the foundation for a comprehensive patient profile and productive team meeting.

• Technology’s Impact on Caregiving. Rajiv Mehta, director of Atlas of Caregiving, will discuss determining the key members of a care network and how technology can help keep everyone in sync.

Session 2, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

• Words Matter: Speaking Your Mind. Ruth Nemzoff, author and speaker on family communications, will share how creating a caregiver team requires productive conversations among members who need to let go of emotional baggage.

• Words of Wisdom: Meet the Experts. Nikki Hochhauser, director of business development at Home Instead Senior Care; Jo Maloney, community liaison for NurseRegistry.com; and Kaye Sharbrough, founder of Senior Seasons, will discuss how to get professional help for loved ones and respite for caregivers.

• Your Golden Years? Caregiving and the Longevity Boom. Mehrdad Ayati, M.D., geriatrician and author, will examine quality-of-life issues pertaining to long-term caregiving and decision-making within a culture fixated on anti-aging “cures.”

Session 3, 1-2 p.m.

• Mindfulness-Based Caregiving. Marguerite Manteau-Rao, LCSW, co-founder of Neurocern, will shine a light on how mindfulness practice can make all the difference in the life of a dementia care partner.

• Patient Rights and the Discharge Planning Process. Paula Wolfson, LCSW, of Avenidas Care Partners will explore how caregivers can learn to effectively mediate and negotiate discharge plans.

• Adult Day Health Care: Helping Families Thrive. Tom Pamilla, MSW, of Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center, will discuss how the program can provide seniors with quality care and allow caregivers some guilt-free time off.

Tickets – $40 – include lunch.
