Crepes draw multitudes: Lady M cakeshop opens in Los Altos

Crepes (a few dozen, not a thousand) layered with a whipped-cream pastry cream make up the signature Mille Crepes Cake at Lady M, a pop-up shop new to Los Altos.

Los Altos is playing host to the Bay Area’s first Lady M, a 40-location cake boutique subject to international enthusiasm, particularly since its expansion in China.

Lady M hosted several pop-ups in Los Altos over the past year and opened a longer-term temporary location next to Chef Chu’s just before Christmas, taking over the site previously filled by a Peet’s Coffee & Tea.

Lines snaked along the street in front of the shop at 4598 El Camino Real during the holiday season. The cake boutique is a “longer term” pop-up, according to the company, but not yet a permanent location.

Cakes are made in San Francisco, and the Lady M signature pastry, the Mille Crepes Cake, costs $9 per slice, or $90 for a cake that serves 12. Lady M reimagined the classic French gateau de crepes with “Japanese sensibilities,” particularly evident in its matcha variation. It also makes sponge-style cakes, cheesecakes and mille feuille cakes that vary seasonally. The crepe cakes, which hand-layer more than 20 crepes with slathers of cream, come with a special knife for slicing – Lady M recommends wiping cream off the knife between each slice – and the cakes have to live inside the fridge before they’re served.

Los Altos’ Lady M is closed for the holidays until Thursday, and then open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.
