Ehrlich and Lewis

Strike, the Los Altos-based brewery started by a trio of local beerpreneurs, found a permanent home this winter.

Jenny Lewis, Ben Lewis and Drew Ehrlich founded Strike from a home in Los Altos, graduated to a shared contract brewery and are now retrofitting the former Viking Door and Window building in San Jose as a warehouse space, where they’ll brew beer and eventually, they hope, lead tours and establish a tasting room.

They’re working on the new space this month with plans to start production in the new year – hopefully in time to concoct something special for SF Beer Week, scheduled Feb. 7-16.

Contract brewing at a shared plant in San Jose let the startup begin to scale up from the homebrewing operation it once was. But now, a dedicated space allows for larger-scale experimentation – and bigger contracts. Major retailers like Costco have started stocking their beer, which requires increased production volume. Strike produced 500 barrels of beer last year, is on track to make 1,000 this year and may double it next year.

What new flavors should Strike fans expect to see on the menu? Ehrlich plans to try his hand at the “sour” Belgian styles, a geuze or a lambic, while Jenny Lewis looks forward to a West Coast fruit beer next summer – huckleberry, olallieberry or the like.

Local CEO Bartlett honored for culinary work

The Chef’s Association of the Pacific Coast Inc. last month honored Los Altos resident Mary Clark Bartlett, CEO and founder of Epicurean Group, with the Antonin Carême Medal.

Named for chef Antonin Carême, known as “the Chef of Kings and the King of Chefs,” the award honors “individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the culinary profession, to education, or the advancement of gastronomy and to the culinary arts.” Bartlett was among this year’s six medal recipients, joining Leon Panetta, Aaron Johnson, Lars Kronmark, Thomas Macrina and Bobby Moghaddam.

Bartlett was the 160th recipient and the seventh woman to earn medalist honors, according to Elliott Katz, 2013 Carême board trustee. Katz introduced Bartlett, the evening’s first honoree, as “a recognized thought-leader in sustainable food,” citing her environmental education and advocacy efforts.

Bartlett accepted the award on behalf of her business partners, Rey Hernandez and Marvin Rodriguez, who, she said, have been by her side since the company’s inception.
