Police investigate spate of auto burglaries

The suspect or suspects responsible for three auto burglaries reported last week on the same street in Los Altos remain at large. Because of proximity in location, method of crime and period of time, officers believe the burglaries are connected, police Sgt. Brian Jeffrey told the Town Crier. 

All quiet so far: Shelter order has not sparked crime wave

So far – knock on wood – the county’s shelter-in-place order for coronavirus containment does not seem to have encouraged opportunistic ne'er-do-wells toward burglary, vandalism and similar villainous preoccupations. Calls for service, in fact, are down, local law enforcement leaders told the Town Crier Wednesday (March 18).

Sex offender arrested in Los Altos

Los Altos police last week arrested a transient man on two misdemeanor warrants related to his designation as a sex offender, according to Los Altos Police Sgt. Brian Jeffrey.

Jeffrey said the police report on the arrest, which occurred at approximately 1:26 p.m. March 2, stated that patrol officers responded to a welfare check of an elderly male who appeared to be hitchhiking in the area of South Springer Road and Berry Avenue. When officers located and made contact with the man, Thomas Cherf, 65, his warrants popped up in a court database. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

Pedestrian struck by car in downtown Los Altos

A pedestrian sustained moderate injuries after being hit by a car last month in the crosswalk where San Antonio Road meets Main Street, just outside Enchanté Boutique Hotel, according to the Los Altos Police Department.

At approximately 2:18 p.m. Feb. 18, a vehicle traveling through the intersection struck the pedestrian, who was transported to an area hospital. Police said the driver stayed on scene to cooperate with the first steps of their investigation.
