Scouting News: Troop 33 honors 7 new Eagle Scouts

Los Altos Boy Scout Troop 33 honored seven new Eagle Scouts during an Aug. 4 ceremony.

The Eagle designation is the highest achievement in Scouting, with only 4% of Boy Scouts attaining it. To earn the Eagle rank, Scouts must complete a minimum of 21 merit badges, lead a community service project, hold multiple troop leadership positions and perform community service.

Elizabeth de Windt Berg and Daniel McCall Bernstein announced their engagement to be married June 13 at Berkshire School in Massachusetts.

The bride is the daughter of Megan Steck Berg of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Miyako Koinuma Hawkins

Miyako Hawkins 082819 onlineAUGUST 20, 1934-AUGUST 2, 2019 Miyako Koinuma Hawkins, much-loved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away on August 2, 2019 at Schneidmiller Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Miyako Koinuma was born in Tokyo, Japan, August 20, 1934 to parents Shigeru and Ryo Koinuma (Kato). She was the only girl of their four children, with three brothers, Ichiro, Jiro, and Saburo, all of whom have pre-deceased their sister. She met her husband, Joseph Hawkins, in Tokyo while he was in the US Air Force stationed nearby, and she was a student at Aoyama Gakuin. They were married on October 20, 1954. After Joseph Hawkins was discharged from the US Air Force in 1955, they returned to the United States to California where they lived in Sacramento, East Palo Alto and then settled in Los Altos to raise their family over the next 30 years.

Marion Ruth Scatchard

Marion Scatchard 082819 onlineMarion died peacefully on August 19, 2019 with her nephew, Mark by her side in Michigan. Age 96 ? years young. A great woman who will be remembered for her youthful spirit and zest for life. A resident of Sunnyvale for 32 years. Born on Feb. 26, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, of polish ancestry. Her family came first, even though she lived in CA. She made many trips back to visit for birthdays, holidays and special occasions. Survived by her nephew Mark (Diana) Sikorski, great nephew Christopher, nieces Jennifer, Lauren, and Meagan. 6 great great nephews Nicholas, Brendan, Justin, Joseph, D.J. and Asher. Also survived by her “California Family” made up of many loving friends. Preceded in death by her mother Mamie, husband Tom, brother Robert Sikorski, nephew Rob Sikorski. Marion's career in the electronic industry spanned 60 yrs, retiring at the age of 79. She began with PC Circuit Board Assembly, working her way up to Lead and then gradually moved on to management for Inventory Control, Shipping/Receiving and Maintenance. A great team leader and teacher for many, especially the young people who worked for her.
