Virisine Racumu online 050119.JPG crop (she is on left)Virisine Racumu passed away, peacefully at home, on April 17, 2019. She was surrounded by her son, brothers, sisters, mother, nieces and nephews, all of whom were in Fiji, and participating in a novena with her via video call. Viri was born on February 16, 1961 on the island of Taveuni, Fiji. She was the fifth of ten children, the third oldest girl. She attended primary and secondary school on Taveuni. As a young girl she loved playing netball, a sport she continued into her adulthood. Playing netball afforded her the opportunity to compete throughout Fiji, which ignited her life long love of travel and adventure. As there was no college on the island, a family friend taught her how to type. With this skill, she obtained employment, as a clerk, at the the Wairiki parish office.

Patricia (Patti) Hirschbek

Patricia (Patti) Hirschbek online 050119Patricia (Patti) Hirschbek, 86 - Our beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, of Mountain View, CA died on Easter Day, April 21, 2019 after a short illness. She was born in Webster City, IA on March 16, 1933, the daughter of Lawrence Floyd Leopold and Rigmor Elizabeth Madsen. Patti retired from the banking industry and was a Branch Manager for San Francisco Federal Savings and Loan in Los Altos for many years. She earned several awards in her profession. Patti was a wonderfully outgoing, caring person who made many friends over the years. She was a member of the Cupertino De Oro Club and Los Altos Garden Club where she held many board positions over the years. She also enjoyed volunteering for the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts.

Dolores 'Dodie' Alexander: Led formation of Community Health Awareness Council

Dolores “Dodie” Alexander, a longtime community leader and co-founder of the Community Health Awareness Council, died March 20 in Penn Valley. Mrs. Alexander was 88.

The mother of five children, the former Los Altos resident was the key force behind the formation of CHAC in 1973, a time when the drug culture was beginning to impact local schools. CHAC has grown into an influential nonprofit counseling organization that has served thousands of local students and parents over the course of its 46-year history.

Emily Parcel Martin

Emily Parcel Martin 042419 onlineLos Altos-area resident Emily Parcel Martin passed away at age 94 on Wednesday, April 3rd.  She passed peacefully with her family present. Born in 1924, to Columbus and Bernice in Colorado, Emily grew up in the Denver area and completed her B.A. in Social Work at the University of Denver. She married Wayne Parcel while completing her degree, then moved to Connecticut and Pennsylvania with him and assisted in his metallurgy lab and typed up his thesis while working in a library of Social Work. In Pennsylvania they had 2 daughters, then moved to the Bay Area, and added a son. Emily was an incredible Mom, active with everything from holding "craft days" to oil painting,  Emily was active in the Unitarian Church, running the Christmas pageants; and always lent a helping hand to friends and neighbors.
