James Thurber: Former Los Altos mayor was celebrated diplomat, volunteer

James Thurber, a distinguished diplomat and community volunteer who served as Los Altos mayor, died June 16 after a brief illness. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday.

The longtime Los Altos resident was in the Foreign Service for 23 years. From 1967 to 1973, he served in various positions in United States Information Agency (USIA) offices in Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria. From 1978 to 1981, Mr. Thurber served as counselor of embassy at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, and prior to that as chief of the Policy Guidance Office at USIA in Washington, D.C.

Earl 'Buzz' Ellison: Longtime Los Altos resident towed a quick wit, valued enthusiasm

Chances are that if you own a vehicle and live on the Peninsula, you knew Earl “Buzz” Ellison. He was the owner of Ellison’s Body Shop (1929-1998), located on the corner of Alma Street and Forest Avenue in Palo Alto, and founder of Ellison’s Towing (1965-present).

Mr. Ellison died May 30 at his Los Altos home, surrounded by family. He was just one month shy of his 93rd birthday.


Phillip T. Jones, 90, of Los Altos, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2018 at his home attended by family.

Ralph passed away peacefully from cancer Sunday evening at home with his loving family by his side. His dedication to community service, Stanford, his work ethic and moral compass, wit, intellect, warmth, and mentorship endeared him to family and friends and touched many lives.
