Maureen S. Scherer

MaureenS onlineMaureen (Renie) S. Scherer passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on January 17, 2021 after a 9 year battle with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 78.

Renie was born in Covina California in 1942, she spent her youth ballet dancing, riding her family horse Lida and helping her parents in their flower shop. She graduated from Covina High School in 1959. She attended the University of Redlands where she was a member of the freshman Song Leader team and Delta Kappa Psi sorority. She graduated with a BA in Spanish in 1963. She was always up for an adventure and loved to tell stories about her semester abroad living in Mexico City in 1962!

After graduating from Redlands, she moved to Burlingame, California where she began her teaching career with 3rd and 4th graders. Shortly after her move, she met and eventually married the love of her life, fellow Redlands alumna Jim Scherer. Renie and Jim had 2 children, Scott Scherer and Julie (Scherer) Nelson. When they moved to Los Altos in 1977, she quickly found ways to get involved. She led Girl Scout troops, she was an active volunteer in the schools her children attended and she tutored reading and tutored English to Spanish speaking children in the Whisman School District where she also taught 3rd and 4th grades.  She joined book clubs, the Los Altos Methodist Church and National Charity League with her daughter. Anyone who knew her, understood quickly that she was always willing to lend a hand, listen unconditionally or volunteer her time and energy however it was needed.

In her free time, she loved to dance with Jazzersize of Los Altos, play tennis at Fremont Hills Country Club, watch her children/grandchildren’s sporting events and travel. She visited over 21 countries in her 54 years of marriage to Jim!  But what she enjoyed most, was spending time with her beloved family and many friends. We fondly remember the days when she drove twice a week to San Francisco to babysit her grandchildren whom she was so very proud of and enjoyed so much.

Renie is survived by her loving family; husband Jim Scherer and their children Scott (and wife Meg Scherer) and Julie (and husband JP Nelson); her 5 grandchildren Miles and Sadie Scherer and Mia, Ella and Lexi Nelson and her brother Michael Miller.
