Dec. 8, 1926 – May 13, 2020 Resident of Los Altos Our lovely wife, mother and grandmother was a kind, compassionate and genuinely beautiful woman. Ione passed away peacefully at the age of 93 with her husband, Jack and daughter, Sue by her side. Born in Storm Lake, Iowa to parents, Albin and Olga Peterson, Ione was raised in Cedar Rapids with her siblings Galyn, Allan and Doris. Ione attended Wheaton College where she met Sid Scott. After graduating with a degree in biological services, she and Sid married in 1948. They lived in Michigan and New York before moving to Berkeley, CA where they started their family with the births of Susan, Steve, and Jim. In 1969, the family moved to Los Altos when Sid accepted the position of head counselor at Milpitas High School. Later Ione became a teacher at Randall Elementary also in Milpitas.
In 1972, the Scott family experienced the passing of Sid. Four years later, Ione married John (Jack) K.H. Mackay who had three children- Mahre, Heather and John, which resulted in blending of the Scott and Mackay clans. After 18 years of teaching, Ione retired in 1990. In their 44 years of marriage, Ione and Jack enjoyed traveling the world, visiting family and friends while exploring new cultures and growing in the life they shared. They both were very involved at Peninsula Bible Church. Ione especially loved spending time with the Women’s Bible Study, mentoring Young Moms, and was a longtime participant of the Bible Study Fellowship International. Ione and Jack were blessed to have had the opportunity to serve in 10 medical and educational missions to India with PBC/ Operation Mobilization and Partners International. Ione loved the people of India. The time spent with the women and children they visited there was extremely meaningful to her. Ione’s greatest joy was her love and care of family. This was evident in the way she and Jack supported their children’s and grandchildren’s education and various activities such as: track meets, basketball games, horse shows, swim meets, water polo matches, soccer games, graduations and weddings. Ione’s consistent, supportive nature will always be valued and appreciated. Ione had tremendous faith and prayed daily that everyone in the family would have a personal relationship with Jesus as Lord and Savior. Her love for the Lord made Christmas Eve a very special holiday, as family would gather together to celebrate the birth of Christ. A highlight of the evening was Ione’s sharing of the Nativity Story from the Bible. Ione welcomed everyone! From near and afar, relatives, missionaries and friends who visited lovingly referred to their home as the Mackay B & B. Her gracious and warm hospitality will always be remembered by people all over the world. Ione loved attending the San Francisco Symphony, reading, gardening, cheering on the Golden State Warriors, and celebrating anniversaries with Jack in Carmel. Ione is preceded in death by her brothers and sister and her son, Jim. She is survived by her husband, Jack, children Susan, Steve (Kaye), Mahre (Gary), Heather, John (Stephany), six grandchildren- Amanda, Hayley, Austin, Bryce, Cailin, Melissa, niece Kay (Tony), nephews Jeff (Beth) and Kent (Marilyn), brother-in-law, Neil and sister-in-law, Nancy (Norvel). Due to the current limitations brought on by the Covid-19 virus, a celebration of Ione’s life will be held at a later time.
