John Leslie Sly devoted father of three sons and loving husband of Pauline Sly passed away peacefully at his home on January 2, 2020 with family by his side. John is survived by two children Michael and Jonathan, daughters-in-law Belis and Brigitte, and grandchildren Fiona, Keira and Derin. He lost his youngest son, Anthony on July 31, 2012. John also has a half-brother, David Sly living in London, England, where John was born on September 28, 1929. John met Pauline in Derby, England and they were married in 1957. They eventually immigrated to the United States via the steam ship Liberte in 1959 and settled in Hingham, Massachusetts a suburb of Boston. While on the East Coast, John worked in media sales companies and also co-owned an art gallery in Hingham, the Bare Cove Gallery which Pauline helped to manage. John was a painter in his downtime and had a very good eye for local artistic talent displayed in the gallery. Sons, Michael and Jonathan were born in Massachusetts and the family enjoyed their time there until relocating to Los Altos, California in 1970.
In Los Altos, their 3rd son, Anthony was soon born. John continued a very successful career in media sales, becoming a Publisher and Regional Vice President of CMP Publications. John was a beloved manager who welcomed his work colleagues into his home as family. He enjoyed entertaining and loved to converse on art, music, sports and politics. John was a devoted father who attended all his son’s sports games and musical performances. In addition to painting, John also tried his hand at hobbies like fencing and photography. John was a well-read, well-rounded person who travelled the world extensively with eyes wide open to new experience. The family spent a lot of time in England visiting family, but also had favorite vacation spots in Mexico and Maui where the Sly family at one time owned property. Visiting the Sly house today one sees pictures of celebrations, travels and a life so very well lived. A small memorial service took place on January 10th and immediately following John was laid to rest next to his son Anthony at Gates of Heaven Cemetery. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America would be very much appreciated in lieu of flowers. As a family we would like to support the great research that is being done for better treatment of this debilitating disease. Dad, you are always in our hearts. We love you.
