Jacob "Jake" Edward Hampel, 26, adored son, brother, grandson and friend, passed away on April 13, 2019. He was born in Los Gatos, CA on February 8, 1993, the dear son of Craig and Christine Hampel, and wonderful brother to Allison Hampel. Jake's grandparents are Fred & Sharon Hampel, Stanley Douglas and Rosemary & Elbert Schroader. Jake enjoyed the love and many adventures with his Uncles, Scott Douglas (Annie) and Christopher Hampel (Annette) and Aunts Tarri Banas (Charles) and Mia Leidig. Jake created some wonderful memories with his Illinois cousins, Emma, Gracie, Hannah, Brooke, Nicole, Kyle, Tyler, Rose, Zac, Maddie, Jessica, and his Colorado cousins, Emma & Ethan. Jake lived in San Jose, CA for 12 years before moving to Los Altos, in 2003. He was a graduate of Los Altos High School and San Francisco State University where he obtained a BA in Criminal Justice, just like his Uncle Scott.
You may remember Jake's smiling face at our local Rancho Safeway/Andronico’s where he worked assisting customers in the meat & seafood department. Jake was a kind, thoughtful and compassionate man. He enjoyed the great outdoors: hiking, fishing, hunting, beach bonfires with friends and family and especially his frequent visits to the family's rustic log cabin near Rice Lake, Wisc. Whenever family and friends gathered, Jake and his banjo would provide the heartwarming soundtrack of our get-togethers. Jake's passions were many and included drives along the California coast in his cherished 1994 Jeep, mountain bike rides in Fort Ord and weekends exploring every corner of Northern California. Jake, his parents and sister were fortunate enough to explore much of the USA: hiking throughout Utah with close friends, Oregon and Washington; ski trips to Park City; as well as lifetime adventures to Africa, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, much of Western Europe and most recently Scotland and New Zealand. Jake loved to share the beauty he found in life through photos, videos, and stories. Jake will be remembered for his bright and beautiful smile and a calm and caring old soul whose compassion and love were felt by his family and all who met him. Jake has been laid to rest in Burlington, Illinois. Jake's life will be remembered at a Celebration of Life service at Los Altos United Methodist Church on Magdalena Ave. on May 31, 2019 at 4 p.m., with an open house to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask that donations be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention through the website http://www.afsp.org/take-actiton/give-a-gift/donate-to-afsp/.
