Norma Morris McBride

Age 98 passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019 at The Terraces Los Altos, a loving and active retirement community where she had thrived happily for eighteen years. She was born in Burlingame, California on March 20, 1920 to Zela Harrell Morris and Don Morris. They moved to San Francisco for a year, and then to Manilla for two years while her father was stationed there. The family moved back to San Francisco and then to Palo Alto in 1927. Norma graduated from Palo Alto High School with honors in 1937 and then attended San Jose State until 1938 when father her died and she had to quit school and go home to work to support her mother. In 1943 she joined the WAVES and became a storekeeper in the Navy. After being discharged in February 1946, Norma went back to school at San Jose State and in 1947 was offered a three-month job at the U S Fish and Wildlife Service and stayed for twenty-three years! She met James Ray McBride on a blind date to an opera at Stern Grove, San Francisco.

Their mutual love of opera and tennis made for a match, and Jim and Norma were married on June 13th, 1952. Their daughter Michele Marie was born in 1953, and both parents instilled a passion for all kinds of music, particularly opera, in their daughter. Norma worked tirelessly as a very fine secretary and was beloved to a bunch of engineers at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator) from 1971 to her retirement in 1985. She was a member of Los altos United Methodist Church from 1958 till her passing and sang in the Chancel Choir for forty-four years. Norma is survived by her daughter, Michele McBride Schlaefer, and her two granddaughters Bronwyn Marie and Mariel Grace. A memorial service will be held in celebration of her life at 2:00 PM March 23rd at the Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Avenue, Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Los Altos United Methodist Music Program.
