In Memoriam Dwight & Phyllis Brede (1923-2017) - (1929-2018) Phyllis and Dwight Brede, residents of Los Altos Hills, CA since 1962, passed away, respectively, on November 1, 2018 and April 26, 2017, peacefully and pain-free. Phyllis and Dwight will be remembered for their joie-de-vivre and love of reading, travel, opera, and citizen and community engagement. Dwight, born in Nanking, China of his professor and artist parents, was raised in Michigan and completed his accelerated BS in Electrical Engineering at Cornell followed by Naval Officer Training at Columbia University and posting to the Pacific. Post-WWII, Dwight moved to CA to complete his MS at Stanford in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, then worked on international engineering projects and commenced his doctoral studies at UC Berkeley. There he met and married Phyllis, originally from Berkeley, started a family, and returned to the Navy during the Korean War; upon return, he pursued his engineering career at Ampex Corporation, contributing to the pioneer innovations in audiotape technology.
He further contributed to breakthroughs in disk drive technology over the course of a 35-year career at IBM in San Jose. Dwight and Phyllis are survived by their daughter, Diane Envent, and her husband, Francois, of Pleasanton, CA; grand-daughter Nicole Phillips of Livermore; son, Alex Brede, and his wife, Megan McGinty, of Bellingham, WA; grandson Namara Brede, of Rochester, NY; and daughter Connie Brede and her husband, Dennis Wobber, of Menlo Park, CA.
