Martha will be remembered for her elegant style; for her warmth and compassion; and for her culinary skills, especially her delicious pies. Martha and her late husband, Robert J. Gaspich, M. D., met over the operating table in Chicago, where Bob was a medical student, and she was a student nurse. Martha returned to school years later, walking over the hill from her home in Los Altos Hills with her dog Skipper, to Foothill College, where she earned her degree in nursing. She then worked as a Registered Nurse for twenty-five years at El Camino Hospital. Bob was one of the cofounders of the hospital and had been Chief of Medicine. Martha worked full-time while raising eight children and still made time to contribute to her community as a volunteer, including putting on golf tournaments at Los Altos C. C. to raise money for orphan children. Martha and Bob loved to dance and to attend concerts and plays here, in NYC, and in London. Martha cofounded the Los Altos Hills Club with Lorna Corbetta and Lorraine Shanafelt.
She had been a member of the Women’s Eighteen Hole Team at Stanford University Golf Club, where she shot a hole-in-one, and Quail Lodge Golf and C. C., where she shot her second hole-in-one. Martha had also been a member of Fremont Hills C. C., the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California, and the California Nurses Association. Her six daughters, Eileen Jones, Mary Pat Gaspich, Nancy Gaspich Barry, Susan Gaspich Ferrone, Jane Gaspich, and Kathleen Gaspich; her two sons, Thomas Gaspich and James Gaspich; her grandchildren, Tim, Chuck, Isabella, Christy, Monica, Gabrielle, and Stephanie; and her great grandchildren, Gordon, Travis, and Nathan celebrated her life and mourned her loss at St. Nicholas Church in Los Altos on December 20, 2018.
