Lydia Young

OBIT Lydia Young onlineLydia Young was born in the tiny Appalachian plateau town of Ivyton, Kentucky on December 5, 1927. Depression times were tough for Lydia and her Family. Despite hardship, Lydia was determined to make a good life for herself. She left her home on a bus headed for Chicago at the tender age of fourteen. Lydia quickly landed on her feet in the Windy City and found a room and a waitressing job. She was smart, persuasive and beautiful. Wanting to better herself, Lydia saved and worked hard to earn her beautician and cosmetology licenses. With those skills in hand, Lydia set off to the West – to Hollywood. It was there where Lydia blossomed and worked under Perc Westmore and his brother, famous hair and make-up artists at Warner Brothers. Lydia did make up and hair for the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and dozens more famous film stars. Lydia then met Jack Young and gave birth to Scott Allen Young.

Wanting to settle down in a quieter, family friendly town, Lydia and Family moved to Los Altos, where she and Jack purchased a plot of land in downtown Los Altos (now the site of the Packard Foundation). They built a men’s spa called Men’s Health Club and a women’s only spa called Lydia’s. Both businesses flourished for many years under Lydia’s leadership and management. Lydia decided to sell the Men’s Health Club to focus on her women’s only spa, called Lydia’s. After the 1989 earthquake, Lydia closed her spa and her son Scott beautifully remodeled it. The spa reopened as the Spa of Los Altos and Lydia managed the Spa well until she was in her 70’s, upon which time she sold the property and business to fully enjoy her retirement years. Lydia loved to entertain her friends and loved to do ballroom dancing. She had many friends who got together often and took cruises together where they could dance the night away. Lydia even had a boyfriend over thirty years her junior. As Lydia aged, she developed a neurogenerative disorder that eventually caused her death. Lydia passed away peacefully on October 19, 2018 at the age of 90. Lydia leaves behind her sister Margaret Fitzwater of Sanford Florida, daughter-in-law Patricia Young of Atherton, grandson William Young and his Wife Jennifer, and great-Grandson Daniel of Los Altos Hills. Lydia was preceded in death by her siblings Dianne McKinney and James McKinney. A private memorial was held with Family. Lydia was laid to rest at Alta Mesa Cemetery, next to her son Scott, who preceded her in death.
