John P. Withers, Jr.

OBIT John Withers onlineJohn P Withers, Jr. of Los Altos Hills passed away on August 20, 2018, and is finally reunited with his wife, Sandy, whom he adored. He valiantly fought a debilitating lung disease for years, refusing to be bedridden, and painstakingly planned for his family's future right up until the very end. His unbending will and razor-sharp mind were intact, softened only by his big heart and his love for his children and grandchildren who surrounded him on his last day. He was born on Christmas Day, 1942 to John and Clara Margaret (nee Grantham) in Washington, D.C, and grew up in Greensboro, NC. He attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia for high school and went on to Princeton University and then Stanford Graduate School of Business. He settled in Los Altos Hills, CA with his wife, Dorothy "Sandy" Dent, and together they raised three children and built a marriage that was admired by all. The first half of his career was spent in sales at Inmac Corporation and the second half was as a restaurateur and the owner of Kirk's Steakburgers, his favorite restaurant from business school. His final years were spent devoted to his wife's battle with cancer and then confronting his own disease, while trying to extract the most out of life.

John will be remembered most for his mind, his vast sense of humor, and his love of a good time. He had a devil-may-care attitude but cared deeply about his family and friends. To say that he marched to the beat of a different drum would be a compliment to percussionists everywhere.

He made it his mission to not let his children take themselves too seriously, except for what mattered most. He threw the best parties, he wore the most festive clothes, he got the most laughs. He was larger than life, and we miss him already. He is survived by his children, John (Jake), Charles (Charlie), and Charlotte (Callie); daughter-in-law Stephanie; grandchildren John (Jack), Camilla (Millie), and Caroline (Cricket); and sisters, Mary and Jane. There will be a service held on Wednesday, September 12th at 11:00AM at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos
