Norman A. Proffitt, Jr.

OBIT Norman A Proffitt Jr onlineNorman A. Proffitt, Jr. (81) of Los Altos, CA passed away peacefully on July 10, 2018. Norm was born and raised in Oakland, California. As a Boy Scout, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, like his father before him. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1958 and received his commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. The following year he married the love of his life, Carol. He served actively for over four years with the Pacific Fleet and relished every trip at sea; his favorite memories coming from green water hitting the bridge windows. While duty called him to sea, his love for his family called him home; he continued his Naval service as a reservist for six more years. After the Navy, Norm began his 28 year career with IBM, and followed with 14 years at HP. With his sons, he was a very active Boy Scout leader, attending almost every outing. Norm was also a big supporter of the St. Francis High School Marching Band and charter member of the Green Spaghetti Gang. He loved being outdoors, enjoying the natural areas and history of California - a passion he passed on to his sons.

Later in life, he found endless joy and fascination watching his grandchildren grow and delighting in their times spent together. Norm is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol (née Grant), sons Norm (Jane) and Parker (Teresa) and five grandchildren; his brother Stuart (Vallyn) and sisters Georgia (John) Gruver and Mary (Jim) Jolley; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Mary (Dyke) Proffitt and nephew Phillip Jolley. A memorial mass is scheduled for Friday, July 20th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Simon Catholic Church, Los Altos with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pathways Home Health & Hospice, 585 North Mary Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94085.
