JANICE REYNOLDS

OBIT JaniceReynolds

October 21, 1935 - October 5, 2017

Janice Reynolds, 81, passed away peacefully in her Saratoga CA home, surrounded by her children.

Born and raised in Mt. Vernon, Washington, Janice’s family owned a furniture business near the Skagit River in a remodeled barn that still stands today. The family moved to Oregon for more sunshine and finally to Palo Alto where Janice graduated from Palo Alto High.

She met her husband Bill when he moved next door. Jan worked as a technical secretary at SRI to put her husband through graduate school at Stanford, where he eventually became chairman of the Mechanical Engineering department. They raised three children in Los Altos where they lived for 36 years in a house Bill designed and built.

They spent sabbatical years in London, Pennsylvania and Pasadena and traveled to many countries around the world. Jan’s favorite place to visit was France and she spent many years learning the language and participating in bay area French groups as well as tutoring. Jan sang for over 15 years with the Palo Alto based Aurora Singers, which included exchange visits with a group from France. She was also interested in genealogy and worked extensively to document her family tree. A friend recently commented on Jan’s sharp intellect and quiet grace. Others who knew her would agree. She had a wonderful wit, loved crosswords and regularly bested family and friends at Scrabble. Jan was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, William C Reynolds in 2004.

She is survived by her children Russell (Anita), Peter (Mary), and Margery Reynolds; grandchildren Sarah, Travis and Taylor Reynolds; sister Joan Shogren; and her loving companion for over a decade, Denis Mee. Janice was remembered in a private family memorial on her birthday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Yosemite Conservancy or a health research foundation of your choosing.
