Patricia Burgess, of Big Bear Lake, passed away from cancer, on June 27, 2017 surrounded by family in University Place, WA. Born May 20, 1963 at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA to Robert and Lucinda Burgess, she grew up in Los Altos.
Pat attended Santa Rita Elementary and Egan Junior High Schools and graduated from Los Altos High School. She also attended Foothill College before transferring to the University of Southern California where she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts. Pat received her Teaching Credential from the University of Redlands and was awarded a Masters of Documentary Photography from the University of Sydney.
Pat moved to Big Bear Lake in 1990 and over the years taught kindergarten through 6th grade in the Bear Valley and Tustin School Districts until her death. Pat loved teaching and the children she taught. Her creativity and caring were evident in her classrooms and in her teaching, where she provided a supportive learning environment for her students. She was an encouraging mentor and example to many teachers and was selected as a Mentor Teacher for two years, where she shared her expertise with beginning teachers. In Big Bear Lake, Pat volunteered at the Big Bear Lake Discovery Center and was active in her church.
Pat loved to travel and made many friends in her travels. She spent a year traveling to every continent of the world, while focusing on wildlife photography, which was another passion of hers. She loved the outdoors, hiking, sailing, paddle boarding and being on the water. Pat also loved spending time with family and friends.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lucinda Burgess. She is survived by her sisters Lucinda (James) Stangl of University Place, WA and Diane (James) Vanden Brook of Woodinville, WA, and her brother Robert (Paige) Burgess of Sunnyvale, CA; and her beloved nieces and nephews; Emma Stangl; Christopher and Elizabeth Vanden Brook; and Trevor and Jason Burgess. Pat’s enthusiasm for life, teaching, learning, travel and her love of family and friends will be remembered by so many.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at Calvary Chapel, Big Bear Lake, CA on September 9, 2017 at 3p.m.
