OBIT CarolZabel

Carol was born in Omaha, Nebraska April 5, 1928 to Arthur Henrickson and Rose Benes. She passed away peacefully at her home in Los Altos on January 15, 2017, at the age of 88.

Carol grew up on a farm in Wahoo Nebraska, where as a child, she rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse several miles from her home. During the day her horse would get loose, which often resulted in Carol making a long, solitary walk home. She’d laugh as she conveyed this and many other great memories of growing up on a farm.

Carol was a graduate of the University of Nebraska with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. She was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Pi Mu Epsilon, Iota Sigma Pi, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. While at the University of Nebraska, Carol met her husband, Norm. They married on June 5, 1949, and in 1956 moved to California, living in an apartment on Orange Ave in Los Altos. After moving to Menlo Park, they moved back to Los Altos in 1967.

Carol was active in AAUW, an avid reader and birder, and a member of the Audubon Society. She was a docent at Jasper Ridge for many years, leading hikes and studying the plant life around Searsville Lake. Carol and Norm loved to camp, which they did well into their 70’s. They also enjoyed playing bridge, cribbage and dominoes with their kids and grandkids. Carol was a caring and loving mother and wife.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Norm, who passed in 2011, just shy of their 63rd wedding anniversary. Carol is survived by her son Bob Zabel and his wife Kim, of Los Altos, CA; daughter Barb Orrock and husband Mark, of Los Altos, CA; grandsons Travis (Lindsay) Zabel and RJ (Alex) Zabel, Jack and Luke Orrock, and Russel (Kyla) Miller, and great grandchildren RJ, Giovanna, Travis and Marissa.

She will be missed. There will be a celebration of her life at the end of February.
