OBIT MabelChesnut

Mabel Margaret Chesnut, born July 8th 1921, passed away peacefully in sleep, in her home of 64 years in Los Altos on May 22th, 2014. Mabel was born is Ashley, North Dakota to Henry and Matilda Feil. Mabel was the youngest of her siblings; Dorothy, Martha, Emil, Marie, Ella and Lydia who all passed before her.

She moved off the farm to stay with her married sister, Martha, in San Francisco, CA where she went to Heald Business School and became a bookkeeper.

She met her husband, Fred Chesnut, in San Francisco where they were married. They lived in Denver initially while Fred went to watch makers school and upon Fred’s graduation, they returned to California and they finally settled in Los Altos in 1950. Mabel kept the books for Fred Sr. during the years he owned Chesnut Jewelers on University Avenue in Palo Alto. Mabel and Fred were two of the founding members of Los Altos Lutheran Church. Fred and Mabel had two children, Fred Jr. (wife, Beth) and Pam (partner Charlie). Pam died from complications of Scleroderma in 2012. Fred Sr. passed away in 1994. Mabel is survived by Fred Jr and 4 grandchildren; Kate, Daniel, Matthew and John, and one great-grandchild, Villiami.

The family suggests that donations may be made in Mabel’s honor to: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society 1700 Owens Street Suite 190 San Francisco, CA  94158.

Private services will be held.
