June 21st 1935 – July 30th 2013

Joe was born and raised in Anaheim, CA. As a teenager, when he wasn’t in school, having fun with his brother Bob, delivering mail, coaching youth sports or life guarding, he could be found at the beach where he developed his life-long love of the ocean.

His college years at Stanford, where he majored in Civil Engineering, opened a new world for Joe. Lasting friendships began on his train trip North with his entering freshman class. He retained close bonds with his freshman roommate, his fraternity brothers, his swim teammates and many others. He met his wife, Nancy, during his sophomore year and in May they celebrated fifty five years of marriage.

After Stanford, Joe and Nancy headed to Wright Patterson Air Force Base where he would spend the next three years teaching at the Air Force Academy and settling into an active family life with their two sons, Mike and Vic.

They returned to California in 1962 and Joe’s career as a sales engineer began. In 1977, he founded Critchfield Mechanical (CMI). His passion for the company and his co-workers never faded. Watching the company grow and seeing two sons at work on a daily basis were two of his greatest pleasures. He continued going to the office, bringing in his home-grown roses, hosting BBQs and visiting the shop as long as he was physically able.

The good fortune of having his sons, daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren living in the neighborhood gave him the opportunity to really know and love them all. They dropped in often and were always welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to a charity of your choice.

Private memorial service will be held.
