Resident of Los Altos

Jim Mortell passed away on May 21, 2013, at the age of 77. He was born in the Bronx, New York, to Philip and Sarah Joyce Mortell. He was a “narrow back”, first generation Irish born in the United States. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and Fordham University in New York. He served in the US Naval Reserves. His career in the Insurance industry took him to Elmhurst, IL, where he met his future wife Hilma Jean Ivey. They moved to Palo Alto, CA, in 1967 for career reasons and married there. He was self-employed with an Insurance sales office in Los Altos. His true calling was as an Instructor in the Insurance field teaching pre-licensing and continuing education classes.

Jim is survived by his wife, Hilma, his brother Philip Mortell and wife Mary of Mechanicsburg, PA, his brother Jack Mortell and wife Kathleen of Belvidere, NJ., and nephews Philip, John, Gerald, Kevin, and Chris plus nephew Mark Wakenshaw and niece Ivey Deitz, children of Hilma’s sister Connie Manahan.

Jim will be remembered by family and friends as the life of the party, a gentle giant, “Little Leprechaun”, and by his wife as a loving husband and friend.

There will be a gathering at Jim’s and Hilma’s home at an undetermined date to celebrate his life.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
