Scouting news: Troop 75, Kiwanis donate to charity

The Kiwanis Club of Los Altos recently donated $1,500 to a charity in Boy Scout Troop 75’s name in appreciation of the troop’s decade-plus of supporting Kiwanis Christmas Tree Lot sales and fundraising. The troop chose Stephen & Ayesha Curry's EAT. LEARN. PLAY. as the charity.

Over the years, Troop 75 Scouts have spent hundreds of hours selling trees, sweeping, setting up and tearing down the tree lot. This year, the Scouts were not able to volunteer in person but continue to help the Kiwanis Club by providing tree delivery service to homes in Los Altos and surrounding areas.

According to Troop 75 parent volunteer Angela Hum Kawahara, a single, elderly woman who ordered a tree last week from the Kiwanis lot was so grateful, she tipped the Troop 75 Scout $20. In turn, the Scout donated that tip to the Kiwanis Club.

Scouts gather supplies to donate masks

Two of Boy Scout Troop 75’s youngest members, 12-year-olds Garrett Cai and Edward Yu did their part in response to the shortfall of personal protective masks back in May.

The boys coordinated efforts by gathering materials, contributions and volunteers to sew masks to be donated, through Maker Nexus of Sunnyvale, to health-care facilities and nonprofit organizations that serve vulnerable communities in the Bay Area and beyond.

Garrett and Edward are both Los Altos residents.

McCulloh, co-founder of Los Altos-based Girls Troop 4103 of Scouts BSA, worked with her troop over the summer to make 100 stuffed bears for children admitted to El Camino Hospital.

The Cupertino resident also organized, planned, participated and cheered on her troop with a virtual walk-a-thon that raised $7,000 for Second Harvest Food Bank.

McCulloh and her inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts are scheduled to receive their awards Feb 8.
