The American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter honored 13 volunteers, including three from Los Altos and one from Mountain View, at its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner May 2 at the San Jose Women’s Club.

The Los Altos honorees were Carol Hoskins, who received a customer service award in the biomedical services division; Neil Katin, who received a disaster cycle services award for outstanding support; and Terry Kearney, who received a new volunteer award. Michael Garcia of Mountain View received a disaster cycle services award for extraordinary commitment and dedication.

Master of ceremonies Jonathan Bernier said the event gives the Red Cross an opportunity to acknowledge all of its 981 local volunteers.

“Our volunteers are the core of the Red Cross mission to help prevent and alleviate suffering in our communities,” said Bernier, the chapter’s volunteer and youth services manager.

With an office in Santa Clara County, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies approximately 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and donations to perform its mission.
