Los Altos resident Elizabeth Barnett, 14, recently received the Girl Scouts Silver Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Barnett is a member of Los Altos Girl Scout Troop 60321, under the leadership of Leslie Carmichael, Kim Donovan and Judy Zellers.
The Silver Award is the second highest award given by the Girl Scouts and the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Barnett earned her award by completing a project – compiling the “Liturgical Garment Catalog: A Fluid Inventory of Garments and Vestments” for St. William Parish.
“When I first started researching ideas for my Silver Award Project, I knew I wanted to focus on a project that would help my church,” she said. “When my family moved here five years ago, St. William Parish welcomed us with open arms. I wanted to give back to my parish.”
Barnett’s project focused on preparing a catalog of garments and accessories – measuring, organizing and recording every vestment, robe, altar cloth and accessory used by priests, deacons and altar servers during each liturgical season.
“Elizabeth’s careful description of each item, grouping related items together and identifying the condition of each piece will allow us to take the next steps to maintaining our vestments,” said Carol Thornton, director of liturgy and pastoral care for St. William and St. Nicholas. “It is just great that she was able to engage so many helpers, and to navigate through a straightforward but large project with such positive results.”
For the President’s Volunteer Service Award, Barnett logged 245 hours of community service in a 12-month period, earning the Gold Award.
She volunteered at her church as an altar server, cantor and choir member, and as a member of the leadership team for the Youth Ministry at St. William and St. Nicholas. She also served as a volunteer/mentor for younger Girl Scouts.
Barnett attended Almond School and Egan Junior High, where she received the choral award for outstanding vocal music student.
She is currently a freshman at Los Altos High, where she is a member of three choral groups –the Girls Ensemble, the Concert Choir and Girls 21.
