Josef Orner of Los Altos Boy Scout Troop 31 recently earned the Eagle Scout rank, the highest achievement in Boy Scouts. Only 4 percent of Scouts attain the rank.
Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, service and leadership, which includes a service project the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages.
For his Eagle Scout project, Orner constructed a hydroponic garden at the Sunnyvale Zen Center. The garden enables the center to grow plants without soil.
“I had done research on sustainable methods for growing vegetables and had a strong interest in hydroponics,” he said. “I came up with some design ideas and looked for a nonprofit organization that was interested. After several unsucessful meetings with local organizations, I received a positive response from the Sunnyvale Zen Center.”
Orner spent three months constructing the hydroponic garden using PVC plumbing parts. After confronting problems with the installation, he made two major design changes before completing the garden.
