Don’t drive small businesses out

It looks as if our community may lose a small, independent business, The Milk Pail, to a very dense development that will increase crowding and traffic.

The change in zoning that would allow this would happen in the name of “smart growth.” According to “smart growth” advocates, we would preserve rural land by making the Bay Area more crowded and polluted.

This is not realistic. If someone owns land in a rural area and that land can be built on, then he or she will develop that land if and when he or she chooses.

The United States constitutes roughly 5 percent of the world population, yet we consume at least 25 percent of the world’s resources. We do not need any more development in the Bay Area.

I hope that Mountain View residents will rise up as the “No on Measure D” Palo Altans did, to stop this terrible zoning change.

Call issued to help wounded vet

I am on the board of the San Jose Travel Industry Professionals, and every December, we host a fundraising dinner. We pick a local charity to give our funds to.

When I heard about Army Sgt. Brian Jergens, I thought it was a good idea to share his story in case you would like to help.

Brian and his wife, Jennifer, both 18, had been married for a few months when she received a call that Brian, a medic, had been gravely injured when an explosive device hit his Humvee. He lost his legs and suffered brain injury, hearing loss, internal organ damage, a broken neck and severe damage to his right elbow. He was transferred to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto. It has been two years of hell for him, and when they were told that the organization Homes for Our Troops would be giving him a special adapted home Dec. 12, they were thrilled and moved to Hollister.

Last July, another miracle happened: They had a 7-pound boy, Jackson.

This young couple could use help as they are starting off with little in the way of possessions.

If anyone would like to donate a gift card, that would be great. If you want to give a check and take a tax deduction, the check should be made payable to “Homes for Our Troops, for Brian Jergens.” Send donations to Maureen Jones, All Horizons Travel, 160 Main St., Los Altos 94022, Attention: Brian Jergens Fund.

Call me with any questions at 941-5810.
