Letter favoring BCS deemed ‘offensive’
Rajiv Bhateja’s letter regarding support for a bond in favor of Bullis Charter School is extremely offensive to the bulk of this community who sent/send their children to the outstanding public schools that make up the Los Altos School District (“Resident supports bond because of charter school,” Oct. 2).
Mr. Bhateja states that he has “an affiliation with neither,” but perhaps he’d be interested to note that a number of students from our excellent public schools go on to universities like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal, UCLA, etc. Perhaps he would be interested to note that the Los Altos School District has educated doctors, lawyers, engineers, venture capitalists, accountants, actors and CEOs.
This does not mean that I do not believe that Bullis Charter School is valuable to our community. It has proven itself to be a very fine school. However, the charter school does not act like a district school in any way, other than that it receives funding from the district and uses district facilities.
The charter school expects the district to bend to its demands and continues to weaken the already scarce financial educational resources by engaging in lawsuit after lawsuit.
It will be interesting to see how much support the charter school would receive in a bond measure. Either the community will learn that it must continue to bow down to the charter school or the charter school will learn to rein in its expectations to more resemble a semipublic school within the excellent public school district.
