Free Range Opera brings "Irene" to Mtn. View this weekend

Free Range Opera Theater, in partnership with Career Closet, present the ragtime musical “Irene” as a charity performance scheduled Friday through Sunday at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St.

Nearly a century old, “Irene” tells the story of a poor, Irish-American shop girl humorously caught up in the New York whirl of high-fashion and Long Island society. The original play ran for a then-record 675 performances on Broadway.

Free Range Opera’s partner, Career Closet, is an organization that helps people make a great first impression as they re-enter the workplace by providing the sort of dress-for-success outfits that the show’s main character wears. Net proceeds from the performance of “Irene” will be donated to local charities.

Free Range Opera Theater is a volunteer, non-profit arts organization made up of music professionals and amateurs whose mission is to research, revive and preserve historic musical heritage.

Performances are slated 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $30.

For tickets and more information, call 903-6000 or visit ci.mtnview.ca.us/mvcpa/nov13.html.
