Los Altos Stage Company's "Fantasticks" enters second week at Bus Barn Theater

The Los Altos Stage Company is scheduled to present the world’s longest-running musical, “The Fantasticks,” through Sept. 29 at the Bus Barn Theater in Los Altos.

Loosely based on Edmond Rostand’s “The Romancers,” “The Fantasticks” tells the tale of Matt and Luisa, young lovers kept apart by their feuding parents – or so they think.

Fueled by their parents’ feigned loathing, Matt and Luisa overcome all obstacles to be together. When they discover that their parents’ grudge is a ploy to ensure the lovers’ marriage, Matt and Luisa’s passions for one another wane until they see the truth in the words of the play’s Svengali-esque narrator, El Gallo: “Without a hurt, the heart is hollow.”

“The Fantasticks” features music by Harvey Schmidt and book and lyrics by Tom Jones. Gary Landis, executive director of the Los Altos Stage Company, directs the production, supported by Gus Kambeitz (music direction) and Jillian Toby-Cummings (choreography).

The cast includes Dan Kapler as El Gallo, Ryan Mardesich as Matt, Casey Ellis as Luisa, Todd Wright as Hucklebee, Ruth E Stein as Bellomy, Martin Gagen as Henry, Ryk Houseman as Mortimer and Spencer Grey as The Mute.

Performances are slated 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

The Bus Barn Theater is located at 97 Hillview Ave.

Tickets are $18-$30.

For tickets and more information, call 941-0551 or visit losaltosstage.org.
