El Camino Youth Symphony conductor steps down

El Camino Youth Symphony (ECYS) music director and conductor Camilla Kolchinsky plans to step down at the end of the 2013-2014 concert season, which will mark her 20th year with the organization.

Under Kolchinsky’s direction, the ECYS works with a group of more than 400 K-12 students from more than 100 schools from San Francisco to Santa Cruz who perform in five orchestras and two ensembles. The organization offers concerts, tours, retreats, summer workshops and master classes that create opportunities for youth at all levels of musical experience to develop socially and artistically.

The ECYS board is scheduled to honor Kolchinsky by naming her conductor emeritus.

Kolchinsky will continue as conductor of the ECYS Sinfonietta and Galbraith Honor Strings for one year, and at the end of the 2014-2015 season will relinquish her role as conductor of the Sinfonietta. As conductor emeritus, she will continue to work with the Galbraith Honor Strings.

“My years with the ECYS have been very satisfying,” Kolchinsky said. “I have enjoyed working with the talented young musicians who have come through the ECYS. It gives me great pleasure to teach and share my love of the master works of classical music with our students and I look forward to continuing to support the ECYS in my emeritus role.”

Kolchinsky’s retirement comes at the close of the symphony’s 50th anniversary season, and as the Senior Symphony embarks on its ninth international tour.
