The Palo Alto Players production of the Broadway musical “Bright Star” opened last week and is scheduled to run through Sept. 29 at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto.

Set in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1920s and 1940s, the original musical tells a story of love and redemption against the backdrop of the rich American South. Written by Steve Martin, the play shares the theme of love and forgiveness through an emotional variation of a true event.

“Bright Star” features a bluegrass score propelled by a moving ensemble of musicians and dancers.

Recommended for ages 12 and up, “Bright Star” features some mature themes that may be more appropriate for older kids. The running time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission.

Performances are slated 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $27-$57.
