Hershey Felder plays the title role in the Bay Area premiere of “Our Great Tchaikovsky.”

Piano virtuoso Hershey Felder stars in “Our Great Tchaikovsky,” scheduled to run through Sunday at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, MainStage, 500 Castro St.

Felder portrays the famous Russian composer, whose works include “Swan Lake,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Nutcracker” and “1812 Overture.”

As he travels to Czarist times to ponder the inevitable enigma of genius, Felder recreates – through music and performance – Tchaikovsky’s life under an unforgiving regime and explores the mystery of his death, nine days after conducting a symphonic premiere in apparently perfect health.

The musical debuted in January 2017 at the San Diego Repertory Theatre and became the highest-grossing show in the Rep’s 41-year history.

Trevor Hay directs.

Performances of “Our Great Tchaikovsky” are scheduled 7:30 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $40-$100.
