Piano virtuoso Hershey Felder stars in “Our Great Tchaikovsky,” scheduled to run through Feb. 11 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, MainStage, 500 Castro St.
Felder portrays Russian composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose works include “Swan Lake,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Nutcracker” and “1812 Overture.”
As he travels to Czarist times to ponder the inevitable enigma of genius, Felder recreates – through music and performance – Tchaikovsky’s life under an unforgiving regime and explores the mystery of his death, nine days after conducting a symphonic premiere in apparently perfect health.
The musical debuted in January 2017 at the San Diego Repertory Theatre and became the highest-grossing show in the Rep’s 41-year history. The production has since played in Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, Chicago and most recently London.
Trevor Hay directs.
Felder has starred in similar shows as Irving Berlin and Beethoven, which both broke box-office records at TheatreWorks.
Performances of “Our Great Tchaikovsky” are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays.
Tickets are $40-$100.
