Stepping Out

Pear's 'Road' rolls on in MV

Pear Theatre’s production of “The Road to Mecca” is scheduled to run through Feb. 11 in Mountain View.

Written by Athol Fugard, “Mecca” is the story of age and youth, passion and propriety.

“Mecca” follows Miss Helen, a widow who has lived her entire life in a small, insular African community defined by religion, respectability and preservation of the social order. Miss Helen threatens all of that when she uncovers a driving artistic passion to create large, beautiful and – to her neighbors – incomprehensible works of art from cement, stones, mirrors and wildly colorful paint.

Her lifelong friend Marius, a reverend concerned with the well-being of the congregation and Miss Helen, urges her to move to a senior home where she can be safe and cared for.

But Elsa Barlow, a young schoolteacher with a commitment to social justice in the depths of the apartheid era, urges Miss Helen to follow her heart despite its disruption to the community.

Betsy Kruse Craig directs a cast featuring Diane Tasca, Briana Mitchell and John Baldwin.

Performances are slated 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays at Pear Theatre, 1110 La Avenida St.

Tickets are $10-$35.
