Los Altos Stage Company is scheduled to present “Assassins” through Sunday at Bus Barn Theater.
Launching the company’s 21st season, the controversial Broadway musical weaves the tale of some of the most infamous characters from American history. It investigates the personalities behind nine individuals who assasinated – or attempted to assassinate – a U.S. president.
Winner of five Tony Awards, “Assassins” is part vaudeville extravaganza, part exposé, with a Stephen Sondheim score that reveals uneasy truths about the American Dream. The story is peopled with desperate characters intent on making their indelible mark.
“Assassins” opened March 2004 on Broadway at Studio 54 by the Roundabout Theatre, receiving the 2004 Tony for best revival of a musical.
Lee Ann Payne directs the LASC production of “Assassins.” Lee previously choreographed the company’s productions of “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Smokey Joe’s Cafe.”
The cast features an ensemble of Bus Barn veterans, as well as new faces, including Chloe Angst, Philomena Block, Ken Boswell, Chase Campbell, Andy Cooperfauss, Aaron Hurley, Drew Jones, Brittany Mignano, David Murphy, Brian Palac, Luca Paliska, Jery Rosas, Alea Selburn, Connor Smith, Anthony Stephens and Todd Wright.
Performances of “Assassins” are slated 8 p.m. today through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Bus Barn Theater, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.
Tickets are $18-$36.
