Los Altos resident Diego Pedrayes has been invited to participate in a national camp run by the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program.

Diego Pedrayes’ love for soccer has a lot to do with the love he has for his late grandfather.

“He was one of the best players in Mexico City and could have gone national, but he chose to graduate from school instead,” the Los Altos resident said. “He’s one of my inspirations to keep playing.”

The Mountain View High girls cross-country team – from left, Shannon Gould, Alex Brown, Gabrielle Joffe, Serena Myjer, Amber Fry and Audrey White – won the league finals last week.

Based on how well the local cross-country teams performed at their respective league finals last week at Crystal Springs, they must be elated that Saturday’s Central Coast Section championships will be there, too.

Placing four runners among the top 10, the Mountain View High girls captured the SCVAL El Camino Division championship Nov. 1 at Crystal Springs in Belmont. The Spartans beat runner-up Gunn by six points.

Los Altos High’s Jackie Wang goes for the kill while Mountain View’s Eleonore Johansen, center, and Lauren Price put up a block.

It’s going to take more than a few broken toes to prevent Los Altos High’s Kat Mumm from playing volleyball – especially against rival Mountain View in the league finale.

The outside hitter played through the pain to help the Eagles sweep the Spartans Thursday.
