Mountain View High’s Jake Stuebner notched nine kills and two blocks Thursday.

Despite dropping the first two games, the Mountain View High boys volleyball team refused to quit against Deer Valley in the Northern California Division I semifinals. The Spartans weren’t able to win Thursday’s match, but they didn’t get swept.

Down 24-21 in the third game, Mountain View rallied for its lone win of the night.

“The boys showed tremendous resolve,” coach M. Anthony Chen said, “ and we tied it up and then went back and forth before pulling out a gutsy game, 30-28.”

The third-seeded Spartans “took the momentum into game four,” the coach added, building a six-point lead. But No. 2 Deer Valley “kept coming at us and caught us at 21,” Chen said.

The game went back and forth until host Deer Valley pulled out a 25-23 victory to secure a spot in last Saturday’s final.

Kurt Dentinger paced Mountain View in the semis, posting 18 kills, two blocks and three aces. Logan Allen added 11 kills and four blocks; Jake Stuebner contributed nine kills and two blocks.

“I’m extremely proud of the effort the boys put out – not just (Thursday) night, but the whole season,” Chen said.

The Spartans, who swept Lowell in the quarterfinals, finished the year with a 29-3 record. Mountain View won the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division and advanced to the Central Coast Section final, falling to Mitty in straight games.
