St. Nicholas School’s 40th annual Kevin Kannengeiser Annual Invitational Basketball Classic is scheduled Friday through Sunday in Los Altos Hills.
St. Nicholas officials renamed their annual boys basketball tournament in honor of Kannengeiser – the school’s longtime eighth-grade teacher, athletic director and tourney organizer – in 2008. He has directed the event, originally titled the St. Nicholas Invitational Basketball Classic, for 37 years.
Five boys teams from outside the area, along with three local Catholic schools, are scheduled to compete in the eighth-grade tourney. Participants include St. Simon (Los Altos), St. Joseph (Mountain View), Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton), St. Martin of Tours (San Jose), Our Lady of Angels (Burlingame), St. Thomas the Apostle (San Francisco), St. Brendan (San Francisco) and host St. Nicholas.
Many of the players will live together for three days. Families of the local teams host the players from outside the area for the weekend. Other traditions include the Saturday morning pancake breakfast for the teams and a Sunday Mass for the teams and their families.
Four games are scheduled in the school gym each day. Friday’s first-round slate: St. Simon vs. St. Martin of Tours, 4 p.m.; St. Joseph vs. Our Lady of Angels, 5:15 p.m.; Sacred Heart vs. St. Thomas the Apostle, 6:30 p.m.; and St. Nicholas vs. St. Brendan, 7:45 p.m.
Games are scheduled to run noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, with matchups determined by Friday’s outcomes. Games are set to run 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Sunday, starting with the seventh-place game and ending with the championship contest. The awards presentation is set to follow at 4 p.m.
The snack bar is slated to be open during all the games, serving sandwiches, chili, soup, pasta, frozen ice drinks and more. The proceeds from the snack bar support the school’s eighth-grade activities.
Three-day passes ($15 adults, $12 children) and all-day tickets ($6 adults, $5 children) to the tourney are available in advance and at the door. St. Nicholas is located at 12816 S. El Monte Road.
