It would appear that the Mountain View High football team has more than just a home-field advantage Friday against rival Los Altos. The Spartans also sport a superior record, play in a higher division and are coming off a better season than the Eagles.

Yet Mountain View coach Shelley Smith expects his undefeated team to be challenged in the non-league game, set to kick off at 7 p.m. under temporary lights.

MV’s Trailblazer Race returns to Shoreline

The 25th annual Trailblazer Race is scheduled Sept. 29 at Shoreline Park, 2905 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View. Proceeds benefit the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail, a nonprofit organization dedicated to extending Stevens Creek Trail and wildlife corridor from the San Francisco Bay to the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Trailblazer Race features 10K and 5K races, both USATF certified, along with a 3-mile trail walk into the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge and an array of family-friendly activities. Cost is $20-$35. Fall basketball camp tips off this month

Spartans Sports Camp’s Fall Basketball Camp is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays in September and October (except Sept. 26) in the Mountain View High gym. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8. Registration is $395 for all seven Saturdays or $60 for one day; cost includes a T-shirt, water bottle and drawstring backpack. Jacob wins division of lobster crate race

Los Altos native Lauren Jacob won the medium-weight division of the Maine Lobster Festival Great International Lobster Crate Race Aug. 4. The Los Altos High graduate crossed 397 wooden crates strung together from the docks at Rockland Harbor in Maine before falling into the water. Jacob, a standout distance runner at Johns Hopkins University, was the overall winner of last year’s race.

Trio of Lancers earn All-American status

Three water polo players from St. Francis High were named National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-Americans last month. Rising senior Elise Walker made the girls fifth team; graduated senior Frank Lozinski and rising senior Berk Aksoy were voted to the boys fifth and sixth teams, respectively.
