St. Francis grad has career day for U of O

Former St. Francis High football standout Cyrus Habibi-Likio rushed for a career-high 81 yards in the University of Oregon’s 35-31 win at the University of Washington Oct. 19. The sophomore running back also scored a touchdown for the nationally ranked Ducks.

CIF to award money for scholarships

The California Interscholastic Federation, which governs the state’s high school sports, is accepting applications for the 2020 CIF Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards. The awards are aimed at “college-bound seniors whose academic and athletic careers have been truly exemplary and whose personal standards and accomplishments are a positive model for others,” according to the CIF website. The CIF will award $5,000 scholarships to two state winners and $1,000 scholarships to 20 section winners. The deadline to apply is Feb. 20. To apply and for more information, visit cifstate.org.

LAHS freshman, varsity girls set school records at Baylands

Los Altos High freshman Lauren Soobrian set a school record and helped her girls cross-country team set one as well at last week’s third SCVAL meet.

In what coach Steph MacKenzie called “the most exciting news of the day,” Soobrian ran the 5K course at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale faster than any girl in Eagles’ history and her varsity girls team also entered the record book for posting the school’s best time there.

CIF tabs Grissom for exec commitee

Mountain View High principal Dave Grissom is the newest member of the California Interscholastic Federation’s Executive Committee. The CIF, which governs the state’s high school sports, announced Oct. 4 that Grissom was chosen to serve on the nine-member committee.

Fall hoops camp set for MVHS

Spartans Sports Camp’s final Fall Basketball Camp is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Mountain View High gym. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8. Cost is $60, which includes a T-shirt, water bottle and backpack. All proceeds benefit the Mountain View High athletic department. MV girls golf team closes in on berth in section playoffs

The Mountain View High girls golf team capped its first season in the SCVAL De Anza Division with home victories over Saratoga and Gunn last week to finish third at 6-4 – good enough to qualify for this week’s league tournament.

The Spartans beat Saratoga 207-229 behind Katelyn Lee’s 38 and topped Gunn 210-227, led by Reeya Vasishta’s 37, at Shoreline Golf Links.
