St. Francis girls survive late rally by Presentation in basketball playoffs

The St. Francis High girls basketball team’s fast start enabled the Lancers to withstand Presentation’s fast finish to Thursday’s playoff game.

Seventh-seeded St. Francis held on for a 54-48 road win over the No. 6 Panthers in the Central Coast Section Open Division consolation round.

AYS0 Reg. 43 kicks off spring soccer sign-ups

Registration is open for Los Altos-based AYSO Region 43’s spring soccer season for boys and girls ages 5-8. Weekly sessions are scheduled Sunday afternoons through May 4 at Rosita Park, where participants will play games and conduct drills. Students from Santa Rita, Covington, Almond, Gardner Bullis, Bullis Charter, Pinewood and St. Nicholas schools usually play in Region 43. Local basketball & soccer teams enter CCS as league champions

The Mountain View High boys basketball team needed to win last week’s regular-season finale to clinch the league title outright, and the Spartans didn’t have their leading scorer to help them. But even without ailing Sam Tobin, Mountain View crushed Homestead 59-42.

“Our guys really stepped up and played well (Feb. 12),” coach Kevin Mack said. “They knew what was at stake and played at a high level.”

Water polo club opens youth session sign-ups

Registration for NorCal Aquatics’ spring session of youth water polo is now open. For boys and girls ages 8-14, the session is slated to begin Monday and run through May 1 at Los Altos High. Practices are scheduled 6-8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; youth league games are set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 9, March 30, April 6 and April 27.
