Hot Stove Banquet honors five locals

Five people in baseball with local ties will be honored at the 34th annual Santa Clara County Hot Stove Banquet, scheduled Tuesday at the San Jose Elks Club, 444 W. Alma Ave. Recipients include St. Francis High graduates Trevor Bettencourt (Minor League Pitcher of the Year) and John Gavin (Co-College Pitcher of the Year), retired Stanford University baseball coach and Mountain View resident Mark Marquess (Service Award) and Los Altos natives Mark Vasser and son Adam Vasser (Ted Barrett Amateur Umpire Awards). The banquet is set to begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:45 p.m. and awards and auction prizes at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $55 and must be purchased in advance. LA girls regroup after 2 OT losses with 39-23 win against Firebirds

Coming off back-to-back overtime losses, the Los Altos High girls basketball team dismantled Fremont 39-23 Friday night at home. The Eagles jumped to a 10-4 lead in the first quarter and held the Firebirds to just 11 points in the first half.

“The Fremont game was a get-right game,” Los Altos coach Jaclyn Brode said, “and I think we did a decent job of correcting some mistakes from the previous few games.”

Local 6th-grader runs Honolulu Marathon

Vian Patel, a sixth-grader at Almond School, completed the 45th Honolulu Marathon Dec. 10. The Los Altos resident finished the 26.2-mile race in 7 hours, 59 minutes and 44 seconds. Vian placed 17,268th out of more than 33,000 participants. The 11-year-old was among the youngest competitors in the men’s 15-19 division. He prepared for the event by running two half marathons and several 5K, 10K and 12K races over the past two years, according to his father, Amit Patel.

SFHS grad named Mitty football coach

St. Francis High graduate Sione Taufoou (Class of 2001) has been named head football coach at Mitty. Taufoou, the Monarchs’ offensive coordinator last season, previously served as head coach at Menlo-Atherton. He guided the Bears to the Central Coast Section Division I final in 2011.
