Reds hire LAHS grad as assistant coach

The Cincinnati Reds last month hired Los Altos High graduate Donnie Ecker (Class of 2004) as the team’s assistant hitting coach. A standout baseball player for the Eagles, Ecker returned to his alma mater as varsity baseball coach in 2013 after four seasons as a minor leaguer. He resigned after the 2014 season and took a development position with the St. Louis Cardinals, serving as a minor-league hitting coach for three seasons. Ecker worked for the Los Angeles Angels’ organization this year in the role of hitting coach for the Triple-A team in Salt Lake.

CIF sets deadline for scholarship apps

Jan. 22 is the winter deadline to apply for the CIF Spirit of Sport Award, recognizing one male and one female statewide during each high school sports season. Selections are based on exemplary sportsmanship and school/community service and leadership, according to officials from the California Interscholastic Federation, which governs the state’s high school sports. Each winner receives a $1,000 scholarship. Additionally, 60 section winners (one male and one female from each of the 10 CIF Sections, in each season of sport) receives a $500 scholarship. SF football team reaches semis; MV eliminated by Burlingame

The top-seeded St. Francis High football team jumped on No. 8 Aragon early en route to a 34-13 victory Saturday night in the Central Coast Section Open Division II quarterfinals.

The Lancers (10-1) led 20-0 after the first quarter and 34-0 at halftime of a game moved to Salinas due to poor air quality.

MVHS Turkey Trot set for Thursday

The Mountain View High Sports Boosters’ ninth annual Spartan Turkey Trot is scheduled Thursday morning on the school track. The 5K run is slated at 8:30 a.m., the 5K walk at 8:35 a.m., the kids runs (60 and 400 yards) at 9:30 a.m. and the Spartan Mile at 10 a.m. Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Online registration fees are $30 adults, $20 children ages 5-17, $15 high school district students and $10 children under 5. In-person registration, which starts at 7:30 a.m., is an additional $5. The event is capped at 1,400 participants. All proceeds fund team equipment, athletics fields and facility improvements. Fusion softball tryouts scheduled Sunday

The Silicon Valley Fusion’s tryouts for its 14, 16 and 18 A-level travel softball teams is scheduled Sunday at Mountain View High, with make-ups set for Dec. 1 and 2. Competitive players born in 2005 or earlier are eligible to try out. The Fusion is part of Mountain View Los Altos Girls Softball.
