Los Altos girls golf goes 9-1; Mtn. View tops LA in cross-country

The Los Altos High girls golf team wrapped up its season with a pair of wins last week to finish 9-1 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division.

The Eagles beat Cupertino and then Wilcox, the latter by a whopping 69 strokes.

Freshmen Maddie Woo and Kara Chou posted the best scores of the day against Wilcox March 24 at Bay View Golf Course, where senior teammates Annika Gaglani and Joanna Hsieh capped their high school careers.

“I’m very glad that the girls had the chance to play this season and that it ended so well,” Los Altos coach Abe Roof said of his team.

Mountain View won all three of its matches last week to finish with the second-best record in the SCVAL De Anza Division at 10-2.

Coach Frank Smyth said the Spartans’ success against Homestead, Saratoga and Palo Alto was “mainly due to the fine performances of the singles players.” That group included top player Penelope Wong, No. 2 player Audrey Shen and No. 3 player Stephanie Hsu, along with Marina Raynaud and Glenda Boeker, who each got a chance to play at the No. 4 spot.

Mountain View’s boys and girls teams won the final SCVAL meet of the season, while Los Altos placed second in both races Thursday at Baylands Park.

The Mountain View boys beat Los Altos by eight points in the five-school meet behind Emmanuel Leblond’s first-place finish. He ran the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 17 seconds. Los Altos’ Hans Holst came in second (16:35).

On the girls’ side, the Spartans clipped the Eagles by three points.
