Big third quarter propels MV girls to home victory

Up by one point at halftime, the Mountain View High girls basketball team outscored visiting Fremont 24-0 in the third quarter and won Friday’s SCVAL El Camino Division opener 47-23.

“We played well,” said coach Xavier Cook, whose team improved to 9-2 overall.

Audrey Telkamp scored 17 points and Annie Eggleton added 12, highlighted by a 3-pointer that put Mountain View ahead at halftime.

The Spartans are set to host rival Los Altos at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Eagles (5-7) opened their SCVAL De Anza Division slate with a 43-28 win at Saratoga Friday.

Pinewood ran its record to 9-0 with Saturday’s 64-42 home win over Carondelet Saturday. Annika Decker paced the Panthers with 12 points.

Boys soccer

Mountain View opened De Anza Division play with a 2-0 win at Homestead Friday. Ilan Karchmer scored in the first half and Gabriel Barrett found the back of the net with eight minutes left to seal it, according to coach Jim McGuirk.

The Spartans (6-1-1 overall) are slated to visit Los Altos (3-1-2) 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Boys basketball

Host St. Francis fell 63-43 to Mitty in Saturday night’s West Catholic Athletic League opener. The Lancers dropped to 7-3 overall.
