Soobrian sisters shine at national cross-country championships

Local sisters Lauren and Emily Soobrian earned All-America honors for placing in the top eight of their respective age divisions at the AAU National Cross-Country Championships Dec. 7 in Nashville.

Lauren, a freshman at Los Altos High, won the Girls 13-14 4K race with a time of 14 minutes, 30.98 seconds. Emily, a seventh-grader at Egan Junior High, finished seventh in the Girls 12 3K race with a 12:07.87.

The Soobrians represented the Los Gatos Track Club Team, which won both divisions the girls competed in.

Boys basketball

Los Altos claimed the Lynbrook Tournament title with a 57-45 victory over previously undefeated Piedmont Hills Dec. 14.

“It was great to see our guys rise to that challenge and earn a hard-fought victory,” Eagles coach Trevor Naas said.

Brock Susko was named tournament MVP.

Los Altos, which beat Mills and Lynbrook by double digits in the first two rounds, improved to 6-1 overall.

Behind 26 points from Ryan Bahar, Mountain View routed Leigh 65-41 Dec. 14. The junior buried six of his 10 3-point tries. Nic Conrad added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the visiting Spartans (5-1).

St. Francis got off to a 3-1 start, beating Milpitas, Salinas and Northgate and falling to Dougherty Valley at the Palma Tournament. Isaiah Kerr averaged 13.5 points per game in that span to lead the Lancers.

Boys soccer

Salinas topped Mountain View 3-1 in the Homestead Christmas Cup Dec. 14.

“We really didn’t have an answer for them,” Spartans coach Jim McGuirk said.

Kaishu Murakami scored for Mountain View (4-1), which finished second in its bracket of the tournament.
